Sensor Health Status Guide

The sensor Health Status log is located on the sensor’s Manage page. It provides information about the current state of the sensor and uptime. Each entry provides a status, the start and end time, and a symbol to represent any messages attached to the entry. Selecting an entry will display further information in the Log Details section of the page. The various Health Statuses are detailed below:

  1. Healthy: The sensor is connected to the internet, collecting & imaging samples, and uploading data to the Portal. This status should reset about every 12 hours, as the sensor automatically reboots to keep running smoothly.

  2. Standby: Collect Samples has been toggled to off. The sensor is not imaging particles or generating data.

  3. Attempting: The sensor is initializing the collection service and calibrating its internal microscope module for imaging. If the sensor cycles between Attempting and Standby without ever reaching a Healthy status in between, the device is likely out of focus or otherwise unable to collect images. Contact Support if you find your sensor in this state.

  4. No Tape: The device has run out of tape. If the tape is not out, ensure the spool has not come loose from the system based on these instructions. If trouble persists, contact support.

  5. Lid Open: The lid sensor is reporting an open state. If the lid is closed and the sensor continues to report Lid Open, power cycle the sensor (unplug from power, wait 10 seconds, plug back in). If the issue persist beyond this, contact support.

  6. Unhealthy: A system error has been reported, interrupting sample collection. If the error persists, contact support and provide the error attached to the log.

  7. Disconnected: The device has not made a connection to the system for a period of over 6 hours. If you find your sensor in this state, ensure it is connected to the internet before contacting Support.

Regarding what occurs while a sensor is reporting a Disconnected status:

APS-400 sensors have a limited function offline mode. This offline mode is designed to allow the sensor to operate during temporary networking issues lasting only a few minutes. Any frames and associated metadata captured by the sensor will be cached offline until the sensor reconnects to the internet. If a networking outage lasts longer than a few minutes, the sensor may go into an offline state until a network connection is re-established.  Thus, it is important to ensure a stable network connection to the sensor at all times. Wi-Fi signal strength can be checked using the latest version of Particle Sense.
