Connecting a Sensor to Wi-Fi

It is recommended that you choose a location for your sensor that enables it to operate over an Ethernet connection as it provides the best network stability. Please consider this before deciding to have the sensor operate via Wi-Fi.

In order to connect your sensor to your desired Wi-Fi network, you must be within the sensor’s physical proximity as it requires a Bluetooth connection between itself and your mobile device. Once the sensor is connected to the internet you will be able to operate it remotely from any location.

For technical and security reasons, APS sensors will only remember and connect to one SSID. If you use Particle Sense to setup a new Wi-Fi network on the APS sensor, the previous network will be forgotten.

Instructions:

The Particle Sense mobile app acts as your companion to help operate your APS-400 Sensor. It is required to have the app downloaded to your mobile device in order to properly set up and fully manage your sensor. Download the app here:
Apple: Particle Sense app
Android: Particle Sense app

1. Open the Particle Sense app and login with your portal.pollensense.com credentials if needed.

2. Once logged in, you will see a list of sensors that have been added to your Organization. If you are not the Organization Owner, you may only see a limited list based on the permissions the Organization Owner has granted you.

If you do not see the sensor you wish to manage in this list, contact your Organization Owner or reach out to Pollen Sense Support via email: support@pollensense.zohodesk.com

3. Select the sensor you wish to have connected to your Wi-Fi network. This will open the sensor’s Manage page.

4. Once in the sensor’s Manage page, press the Bluetooth icon and ensure your mobile device connects to the sensor. Make sure that you have Bluetooth enabled on your mobile device and allow the proper permissions to connect it to the sensor. On Android, the permission is often called “Nearby Devices”. on iOS, this permission is simply called “Bluetooth.” Note that some android devices may require location permissions.

7.  From the list that appears, choose the appropriate network name and enter its password as prompted. Establishing the Wi-Fi connection may take several seconds.

Open/public networks that utilize a Captive Portal to login are not supported by the APS400.

Once the Wi-Fi connection has been established, you will see a list of information that you may find useful including the MAC and IP addresses associated with the sensor. You will also be able to remotely manage settings on the sensor such as toggling “Collect Samples,” changing its Site, and viewing its Health Status.
